ANTHONY ELLIOT BAKER

My practice and research is informed by the recursive nature of perception. The feedback loop between environment, sensory interaction and modes of consciousness.
As we create technological advancements, we adapt to their effects and affect, their contributions and repercussions, and our labour affords maintenance and perpetuation of further advances. This changes our environment, human interaction, our agency and our understanding of ourselves and life experience.
As an artist I am inspired by recursion and interested in the spaces of internal and external language, both lingual and sensorial, and how semiotics are interpreted, and inconsistent considering the infinity of time and space.
This propels me to further explore the virtue of Temperantia and expanding my installation/sculptural practice to consider the architecture we navigate in our lives, physical, psychic and cyber.
The Acquisitive Award for 2018 was judged by Terry Deen – Head of Learning Qld Art Gallery (GOMA).  Terry commented that this sculpture offered the opportunity for the children of St Ita’s to explore the artwork and it’s effects as they would be able to sit around it with their sketchbooks and draw the form, shapes within it and the shadows that are cast in different lights, as well as noticing how the light reflects off the piece.  This is an interactive artwork for the children that can be touched , rotated and moved.

Zarji and Me 2018

CARMEN WALSH

My artworks involve paintings of nature, my surroundings and my love for my furry friend and companion, my cat Zarji. Having suffered from anxiety most of my life, I have found that one of the best ways to alleviate anxiety is to look beyond myself and paint my surroundings. Putting effort and concentration onto canvas pulls me out of myself whilst also creating something tangible to contribute to the world. Painting nature brings me much joy to my everyday art practice.

Untitled 2018

DEBORAH EDDY

Deborah Eddy is an older emerging artist. Her chosen genre is sculpture as this provides her with an opportunity to focus on feminist issues, particularly, the visibility/invisibility of aging women in society. Whilst feminism may seem anachronistic, a subject well covered and resolved, she finds to her dismay that a great many problems still exist for women today. She is concerned that older women are not accounted for in today’s feminism and yet their issues intersect with other feminist concerns such as sexism, discrimination and inequality.
Her materials are eclectic and are driven by the concept of the sculpture. She employs a hi vis palette, building materials and safety products as metaphors for a patriarchal society. Her construction methods utilise the feminine arts of knitting, sewing and weaving.
She attained a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Queensland College of Art, majoring in Sculpture with a Painting minor in 2016. In the following year she attained a BFA Honours (1st class) along with the University Medal for Academic Excellence. She is currently a candidate for a Doctor of Visual Art at Queensland College of Art, Griffith University.

CIELLE VAN VUUREN

Cielle is a Zimbabwean-Australian emerging visual artist and art therapy student. She immigrated with her partner and son from Zimbabwe to Brisbane in 2008. Settling into a new environment reignited her passion for nature as place, a heritage from time spent in the Zimbabwean bush amplified by her experiences of Queensland’s environment. Concern for and celebration of nature are key elements of Cielle’s recent work. She uses an experimental approach across printmaking, drawing, eco-dyeing and new media; often engaging with visually seductive ephemeral materials like tea bags, silks and thread.
Since completing her Bachelor of Fine Art degree at Queensland College of Art, Cielle commenced postgraduate studies in Art Therapy at the Miecat Institute, Melbourne. She finds this enriching for her arts practice and personally, and subsequently desires to use art making processes and group participation to enhance community connectivity both interpersonally and to the natural environment.

Measure of a Woman I 2017

DANIELLE MILNE

My work explores the symbiotic relationship between fashion and art. I am interested in what occurs when an image made for a fashion magazine is transformed into a painting. Meaning, context and value are radically changed and a new visual language is created. My practice involves collaging fashion images together to create new narratives centred on the relationship between the subjects and the viewer.

Rosalie 2018

TAMIKA GRANT-IRAMU

Rosalie investigates the displacement of an antique bear in a suburban landscape. Inspired by a series of photographs, the process of taking this bear on a journey evokes the curiosity of childhood, reimagining the familiar and seeking knowledge through exploration. By embracing this process I am able to incorporate the abstract nature of linocut carving to reconnect with the micro worlds of my suburban environment. The physicality of linocut carving and depicting a narrative is strongly connected to my Torres Strait islander heritage. Linocut carving is not simply used as a tool for visualizing this environment but one that elevates my curiosity and maintains my connection with my heritage and home.

Finn-Osullivan
Ice Cold 2018

FINN O’SULLIVAN

Finn O`Sullivan is currently completing a BFA at QCA, she is majoring in print and recently has completed a run of experimental screen prints predominantly printed in the binary of pink and blue. The disjointed imagery of the screen prints mirrors how we are constantly exposed to a plethora of images from media. Preliminary collages took imagery from her Mum’s childhood set of encyclopaedias. The screen prints developed through multiple processes of printing, each stage informing the next imposed text or imagery. The process of collaging, altering and layering images was how the experimental printing process developed into a series of screen prints. In a shift of context, a space is opened for subverting the narratives of characters represented in the encyclopaedias.
